So that Bandcamp huh? That warm feeling you get when you buy music directly. No Spotify acting the middle man, paying artists a fraction of a pittance for their work.
That weird feeling you got after learning that they were bought by Epic who immediately started union busting. That weirder feeling when they in turn were sold to Songtradr, an even scummier company.
The feeling when the Bandcamp Fridays stopped being held every month.
That feeling when they proudly announced that this time around, the Bandcamp Friday is sponsored by Roland. And as Nicky Flowers put it, At least it’s Roland and not like, Raytheon or some shit.
And sure, Bandcamp is still my main source of aquiring new music and it will remain so for a long time. But it is just. The feeling. The slow change, the slow ever-present descent into something slightly worse. The way we can’t have nice things.
(Yes, I’m still bitter about losing cohost. (But I feel fine. RSS feeds of people I followed on there, directly reaching out to people I followed on there, going on writing posts like I would on there - on here. It’s nice too.))
Anyways, here is what I bought this time around and a sentence or two about it.
Civilistjävel! - Brödföda
I’ve seen the attention-grabbing (to a Swede) artist name Civilistjävel! in a bunch of different contexts, but never really explored their music. This release appeared in my bandcamp newsletter via a review from an account I follow on there. So I gave it a go and I like it! Sort of an ambient dub techno thing going on.
Alphaxone & Onasander - Futuristic Dereliction
I love the Cryo Chamber label. Dark Ambient stuff. Very cinematic. They go in wholeheartedly on the entire aestethic, the music, the artwork and even the little videos they do for every release and they do it well.
world of knots - 001
Don’t know who these people are, but they appeared in a bandcamp newsletter and I liked the sound of this. Again kind of abstract-ish dub techno-ish. I’m great at writing about music.
Klara Lewis - Thankful
A nice wall of sound. Emotional and crunchy. The preview player does not show that this track is 20:30 long so now you know.
Motormännen - Samhällsinformation
I like Motormännen. I like their idea of sampling a bunch of old Swedish news broadcasts and building a techno track around them. It’s a history lesson delivered by a TB-303. This post also sponsored by Roland hahahahaha
The track title and sampled newsclips refer to the 1980 Swedish referendum about nuclear power.
Their youtube channel has a bunch of their tracks and videos featuring the archival footage they sampled from so one can enjoy a bit of time travel to the cold-war era Sweden. Worth checking out.
